What About The Mess

What about  the mess?

It's no secret that there are fluids involved in birth. However, there is a misconception about how messy it becomes.

Like you, we prefer a tidy space. Planning your birth space starts prenatally when we discuss your birth preferences. You’ll likely labor in various locations but you may have a preconceived idea as to where you’d like to birth, such as in the birth tub or in the bedroom. When we arrive at your birth we set up these areas so we can easily maintain cleanliness. We have many tricks of the trade like utilizing protective liners under sheets and disposable absorbent pads called Chux. In most cases we are able to continually switch out your Chux pads before you even notice.

After birth, while you're bonding with your baby, we’ll be quietly tending to clean up -  sanitizing surfaces, starting laundry, taking out the trash, and breaking down the birth tub if you had one. Before we leave your home, the only traceable sign of a birth will be the new baby in your arms.

I'm afraid of labor pain. Can you help me?

We will be with you every step of the way! While we can not completely take away the work of labor, we will offer numerous suggestions based on your needs that will make it more tolerable. For some clients that is simply being present and protecting their birthing space. For others it includes helping them navigate the many different pain relieving options that can be applied at home - various labor positions, water immersion, massage, acupressure, focused attention, TENS stimulation, sterile water injections, robozo techniques, etc. Depending on your desires at various stages of your labor, we will be as involved in the process as you need.

We highly encourage you to view the following pain management series, particularly those applicable to out of hospital birth, for more information on pain reduction.
